Iron Man

Ok, it’s Sunday morning. I was out a little late the night before, but I’m on call for work, so I have to be up. The phone rings at 9:13am, I have to go to work. So I drive to State College, flip a couple of power switches, and everything is back on-line. What to do next?

Next, I decide I will kill some time by checking out a movie. It’s been a while since I have seen a movie. So I drive to the theater. Buy a ticket. Its 11:30 and I haven’t had breakfast so I buy some soda & some popcorn.

There are only 12 theaters but for some reason I have trouble finding #1. I’m not usually this bad with directions, but it’s early and I’m anxious to eat my breakfast.

I find a seat right in the middle, about half way up. I usually prefer to sit in the isle but so far the theater is mostly empty, also I’m trying to hide because it’s kinda sad to go see a movie by yourself. A few more people come in. Mostly couples with their kids. Some guy in his mid 40’s, at least I'm not the only person by myself. You’ll have that with comic book movies though. Then the strangest thing happens. This couple comes in. They are very out of place because they are 65’ish and they are not bringing any grandkids. They sit down in the row behind me, 2 or 3 seats to my left.

I have never been a big fan of Robert Downey Jr, I also don’t know anything about Iron Man, so I may not be the best person to review this movie. I was very surprised that Robert Downey Jr would be cast as Tony Stark aka Iron Man. I asked a friend who is a huge comic book fan/collector. He informed me that Tony Stark was a womanizing playboy millionaire & a recovering alcoholic. So now I’m thinking “type-cast”.

The move was great. Downey was hilarious and was perfect for the roll. He really gave Tony Stark an interesting personality. Jeff “The Dude” Bridges played the villain. I didn’t even recognize him in the movie. I recognized his voice but it wasn’t until tonight when I saw an interview with him online that I put the pieces together. The entire cast is great. The special effects are outstanding, right down to the cloud that appears when Iron Man breaks the Sound Barrier. The dialog is put together well and there are even some Laugh Out Loud moments.

There is one part in the movie that I specifically connected with. I won't tell you what happened in the movie but I will relate what happened to me and you can piece it together yourself. When I graduated from Army boot camp we were free to go spend the evening with our families. My mom asked me where I wanted to eat. I had already asked around and knew that there was a Burger King close by. Its not that I crave Burger King, I just wanted a cheeseburger, any cheeseburger. As long as it was big and greasy, with lots of cheese and ketchup. Some greasy salty french fries would be nice to. Burger King just happened to be the closest. I saw 3 guys from my platoon in there.

Now I am no movie critic, so you might be better off with what the older couple behind me though. The movie started out with the screen flashing pictures from an Iron Man comic book. At this point I heard the woman tell the man “This must be one of those comic book movies.” What!?!? How could they not know this? I was thinking that they were in for a disappointment. Soon enough they were laughing & Ooh’ing along with everyone else. When they got up to leave one of them said “That was really good.”

Anyone that has ever been to the movies with me knows that I always stay till after the credits roll. Sometimes there is something at the end (all 3 Pirates of the Caribbean movies in case you missed it). There is something at the end of this movie if you are interested in seeing it.

Next? Home, to call mom & my grandmothers. Hope everyone had a Happy Mothers Day!

Hey Scott,

I share your enthusiasm for the movie. I have NEVER been a comic book fan, and I consented to go to this movie only because my guy promised dinner afterward. However, I was completely impressed by the strength of the cast. I also found myself completely jealous of the incredible technology shown in this movie. Oh to have a 3-D model manipulated simply by voice command at my fingertips. Even though I wouldn't take my kids to see it because of the level of violence, I gave it a thumbs up.
